This extended posting is for multiple Transportation Worker I positions within Division 7 of the NCDOT. These positions are classified under the NC04 grade, with a hiring salary range between $42,701 and $54,397. The Transportation Worker I role primarily involves operational work using standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy machinery dedicated to the preventative maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and adjacent roadside infrastructure. Employees in this role will contribute to maintaining the safety and functionality of the state's highway and roadway systems.
Responsibilities in this position include the operation of various equipment such as tractors with multiple attachments, curb machines, cutoff saws, dump trucks, rollers, vibratory roller compactors, pulverizer mixers, pneumatic tire rollers, paint machines, trenchers, and edge-line paint guns. Workers may assist paint crews, erect road signs, and support Electronics Technicians in signal maintenance and installation. Additionally, the role involves vegetation control, debris removal, snow and ice removal, and support in grass and wildflower installation and upkeep.
The work environment is often demanding and may include exposure to extreme weather conditions such as snow, ice, tornadoes, and hurricanes, requiring extended work hours, including weekends and holidays. Safety is paramount in this role, as employees encounter highway construction hazards, heavy equipment, and traffic hazards regularly. Safety toe footwear is mandatory, and flagging work for traffic safety forms part of job duties. Legal operation of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required vehicles with manual or automatic transmissions is essential either at hire or within 360 days of hire through provided on-the-job training.
The ideal candidates for these positions demonstrate experience operating various power and hand tools like chainsaws, weed eaters, skill saws, drills, compactors, and jackhammers, as well as smaller tools including shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammers, screwdrivers, and torches. Physical ability to perform manual labor activities is critical.
