The City of Salem, located in Oregon, is the state capital and the second-largest city in the region, boasting a well-established community of nearly 180,000 residents. Salem is centrally positioned in the scenic Willamette Valley and spans across two counties: Marion and Polk. The city prides itself on its diverse, family-friendly atmosphere, rich historical architecture, and vibrant neighborhoods. The City of Salem operates through eight primary departments, including Enterprise Services, which houses the facilities organization responsible for maintaining city buildings and amenities. The city employs approximately 1,350 dedicated staff members working cooperatively with multiple labor unions to provide quality public services and a safe, welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike. Within this robust municipal framework, the City of Salem is seeking a full-time Custodial Worker I to join its Enterprise Services Department. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of various city facilities. The Custodial Worker I is tasked with performing general and special interior cleaning, minor building maintenance, and some exterior cleaning duties. This role is critical in promoting a hygienic and pleasant atmosphere for city employees and the public. If you enjoy working in a collaborative team environment, prefer night shifts, and take pride in making a positive impact through your work, this opportunity is ideal. The role typically involves working primarily Monday through Friday during evening hours, with some overtime and weekend shifts as needed. The successful candidate will demonstrate independence while executing routine tasks like vacuuming, emptying trash, sweeping, carpet cleaning, and waxing floors. Cleaning and disinfecting restroom fixtures and floors are central to the role, along with handling the cleanup of potentially infectious materials such as vomit, urine, and feces in various settings, including public events or closed facilities. The position requires caution and knowledge of safety procedures while handling hazardous chemicals, moisture, dust, fumes, and refuse. Additionally, the Custodial Worker I will perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and maintaining fixtures. Maintaining the exterior of buildings and grounds is also part of the responsibilities—tasks include sweeping sidewalks, shoveling snow, pressure washing paved surfaces, and various landscaping activities like mowing, weeding, trimming, and watering. This role offers shift differential pay for evening and early morning shifts starting after 4:30 p.m. and ending before 8:00 a.m. Employees benefit from comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for themselves and their families, paid vacation and sick time, competitive pay, and employer-paid contributions to the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Other benefits include voluntary pre-tax contributions to a 457b account, health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts, voluntary long-term care, employee wellness and assistance programs, and access to an employee health clinic. The City of Salem values professional growth and work-life balance, providing a positive work culture with opportunities for advancement. The organization encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion, inviting candidates from all backgrounds to apply and contribute to serving the community with excellence. To be considered, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications, including a high school diploma or GED, two years of relevant custodial experience, the ability to work independently, pass a background check, and obtain necessary security clearances. An Oregon driver’s license and adherence to city driving standards are also required. Overall, this role offers a meaningful career opportunity for individuals who are reliable, safety-conscious, and motivated by a team-oriented workplace.
