This opportunity is for an Emergency Medical Dispatcher within the Worcester Regional Emergency Communications Center (WRECC) and the Town of Shrewsbury, part of UMass Memorial Health’s Communications Center. The role is a non-exempt, full-time position with a mixed 12-hour shift schedule covering 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., including weekdays and weekends. A signing bonus may be available, with eligibility details provided during the interview.
The Emergency Medical Dispatcher plays a critical role in emergency response by managing emergency 911 calls, providing life-saving pre-arrival instructions, deploying emergency medical resources, coordinating with police, fire, ambulance, and aeromedical teams, and maintaining critical communication and documentation during high-stress situations. The dispatcher receives and verifies call information, triages emergencies, and dispatches the closest appropriate response units based on the caller’s location and situation. They also handle helicopter emergency medical dispatch and flight coordination for UMass Memorial Life Flight and the North East Air Alliance aeromedical programs. This involves gathering patient information, managing landing zones for helicopters, flight planning, monitoring aircraft location, and coordinating with receiving hospitals and medical personnel.
Key responsibilities include data entry into computer-aided dispatch systems, communicating with first responders and healthcare providers, ensuring safe helicopter landings, maintaining reports and databases, and assisting with ground ambulance and Life Flight coverage as needed. The position requires a strong ability to work independently under pressure, manage multiple simultaneous calls, and collaborate effectively with diverse teams within the healthcare system and emergency services. This role is vital to ensuring efficient, timely, and compassionate emergency medical services that can make life-saving differences in critical situations. Employees in this position are expected to maintain high standards of communication, accuracy, and discretion to support patient care and operational integrity within UMass Memorial Health’s emergency medical system.
