The role of Sushi Chef at Hy-Vee falls within the Asian Department and is classified as non-exempt. This position is essential for preparing fresh sushi for customers both packaged and made-to-order, ensuring food safety, and providing outstanding customer service. As a Sushi Chef, you will manage multiple responsibilities including ordering and receiving products, verifying orders, labeling and dating items, and storing products correctly. You will be a key contributor to the store’s positive image by delivering courteous and friendly service to customers and collaborating effectively with team members. Reporting to various managerial roles such as the District Store Director and Asian Department Manager, the Sushi Chef also oversees Sushi Clerks, helping to foster a team-oriented environment.
This position demands a strong understanding of proper sanitation procedures, knowledge of merchandising techniques, and involvement in scheduling and food ordering. Additionally, you will play an active role in enhancing the customer experience by greeting customers warmly, assisting their inquiries, and offering support including securing products and handling customer requests. Secondary duties involve planning sushi demonstrations, staying current with meal trends and menu planning, and participating in company-wide and industry meetings.
Physical requirements and working conditions necessitate a physically capable individual able to exert certain levels of force and perform activities such as standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions in a fast-paced environment with occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals and temperature extremes. Equipment used includes ovens, steamers, scales, mixers, shrink wrap machines, registers, walk-in coolers, knives, serving cases, and C.A.R.S. systems. This role involves frequent contact with internal customers, the general public, suppliers, vendors, and applicable regulatory bodies.
Education and experience prerequisites include a high school diploma or equivalent, Hy-Vee food safety training, and Food Safety Certification. Preference is given to candidates with one to three years of related work experience, especially in meal preparation.
