CBP operates in various mission-critical locations across the United States and its territories, including major border crossings, airports, and seaports. Officers have the opportunity to select preferred duty locations such as Nogales and San Luis in Arizona; Calexico, Los Angeles, Otay Mesa, San Francisco, San Ysidro, and Tecate in California; Washington, DC; Miami and Orlando in Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Guam; Hawaii; Chicago, Illinois; several locations in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Vermont, and Washington. Some locations offer recruitment incentives ranging from 10% to 25% of the officer’s salary for initial years of service.
Salary for newly appointed CBPOs ranges from GS-5 to GS-7 levels, with pay scales between $40,332 and $109,952 annually depending on grade, experience, education, and duty location. Additionally, officers may earn up to $45,000 in overtime pay annually once fully trained. CBP positions are structured as career ladders with opportunities to promote through grades GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12 based on performance and time-in-grade.
Candidates undergo a comprehensive training program beginning with a paid pre-academy orientation followed by a 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. The curriculum includes basic law enforcement skills, immigration law, firearms training, examinations of cargo and merchandise, physical fitness, and other essential competencies. For certain southern border and overseas assignments, Spanish language training is mandated.
