WindBorne is currently seeking a highly motivated and adaptable Forward Deployed Operations Specialist to lead the expansion of their weather balloon launch site network globally. This is an in-person position based in Palo Alto, California. The salary ranges from $70,000 to $100,000, adjusted based on background and experience to remain competitive in the market. The Forward Deployed Operations Specialist plays a crucial role at the nexus of hands-on operational competence, complex logistics management, cultural adaptability, and dynamic project execution. The specialist will be responsible for expanding WindBorne’s presence into new international territories by establishing and managing weather balloon launch sites. This role involves supporting the Head of International Growth in executing pilots internationally, coordinating logistics, managing customs approvals, sourcing suppliers, and assembling launch rigs on site. The position demands flexibility and readiness to travel internationally for at least five months per year, working in diverse cultural and environmental contexts. Candidates will handle highly varied tasks from negotiating with gas suppliers in South America one week to deploying in remote locations like Fiji the next. They must be able to navigate local rules and regulations, manage vendors, and implement inventive solutions to ensure the success of international pilot deployments. The role requires excellent communication and negotiation skills, innate adaptability under pressure, and a strong passion for innovation and weather forecasting. Physical stamina and resilience are essential, as the specialist will work in outdoor conditions and perform manual labor, including lifting equipment of up to 75 pounds, often in remote and challenging environments. Mechanical aptitude and technical competency, while not mandatory, will be advantageous. Fluency in multiple languages or the ability to quickly learn new languages, especially French or Spanish, will be a significant asset for managing global operations. Additionally, having a valid passport with visa-free access to over 182 countries and a robust consular support network is critical due to extensive international deployment requirements.
