The Deputy Director is responsible for directing all activities within the Aviation Education & External Engagement Division. The incumbent develops and implements innovative strategies to advance aviation education throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. This role oversees the agency's strategic communications, public relations, and branding efforts, ensuring the agency's mission and programs are effectively communicated to diverse audiences. In addition to program management, the Deputy Director leads workforce development initiatives aimed at strengthening the aviation industry’s talent pool. The individual manages external relationships and programs including the Governor's Aerospace Advisory Council, Virginia Small Air Transportation Systems, and the New Airline Service Incentive Fund. The role also provides oversight of the Aircraft Registration program, serving as a key interface with the public and industry stakeholders. As part of the Director's leadership team, the Deputy Director represents the agency director as required, providing critical input on leadership decisions and agency direction. This position demands strong leadership skills to guide and inspire team members, manage multiple projects, and effectively communicate across government, media, and public platforms. Familiarity with aviation technologies, regulations, and public relations strategies is essential, as is the ability to work independently while meeting strict deadlines. Additional travel within and outside the state is part of the role to attend industry and agency events. The ideal candidate may hold pilot licenses and endorsements, reflecting hands-on aviation experience to complement managerial expertise. This role is essential for maintaining the Department of Aviation's reputation as a leader in aviation education and external engagement, contributing to the broader goals of economic and workforce development in the Commonwealth.
