The current job opening is for a Controller Training Solutions (CTS) Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) to join the SAIC team in delivering air traffic controller training services for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at the FAA Regional Training Site located in Elgin, Illinois. This role is pivotal in supporting the FAA's mandate to ensure the safety and professionalism of the nation's air traffic control workforce, which includes over 14,000 controllers managing daily flights exceeding 50,000 aircraft across the National Airspace System (NAS).
The Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) acts as the pilot and other remote controllers within an Air Traffic Controller training simulator. In this capacity, the RPO operates sophisticated simulated radar displays and voice communication systems that emulate the actions and communications of pilots and remote ATC facilities during medium- and high-fidelity training scenarios. This simulation provides air traffic controller students with realistic, responsive training environments critical for developing their operational proficiency and certification.
RPO responsibilities involve receiving voice communications from students, inputting accurate commands into the automated system that simulates pilot responses, translating displayed information into proper air traffic control terminology, and responding using the voice communication system with the appropriate phraseology. Candidates must successfully complete specific certifications, including classroom evaluations on airspace and procedures and functional laboratory exercises demonstrating proficiency across all RPO positions.
This is a full-time, day-shift position based in Elgin, Illinois, with no potential for remote work. Candidates must be U.S. citizens able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance and have no minimum prior clearance required. Notably, this position is not related to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drone operation. The anticipated salary range for this role is $40,001 to $80,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
Working at SAIC in this role means joining a multidisciplinary team that includes multimedia developers, quality assurance specialists, instructional system designers, subject matter experts, and instructors. The ideal candidates bring strong teamwork, communication skills, and familiarity with air traffic control environments and technologies. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and basic technological tools such as tablets and notebooks is also essential. Prior exposure to FAA Order JO 7110.65 or experience with pilot/controller phraseology will be advantageous.
This role represents an excellent opportunity for professionals interested in contributing to the national air traffic control training mission while working for a leading government contractor committed to technological excellence and employee development. SAIC offers a challenging and supportive work environment where employees can expand their aviation simulation and training skills while supporting the safety and efficiency of the national airspace.
