Riverdale Country School is a renowned independent all-gender educational institution located in New York City, serving students from Pre-K through Grade 12. Known for its commitment to fostering academic excellence, critical thinking, and curiosity, Riverdale aims to inspire its students to live meaningful and purpose-driven lives. The school prides itself on its diverse and inclusive community that reflects the broader New York metropolitan area, with nearly half of its approximately 1,300 students identifying as students of color. This diverse student body comes from 117 different zip codes, highlighting Riverdale's dedication to creating a rich, multicultural environment where all students can thrive. Riverdale emphasizes a balanced approach of high challenge and high support in education, encouraging students to engage deeply in interdisciplinary learning, research, and experiential education both inside and outside the classroom. The school's holistic educational philosophy is designed to develop well-rounded individuals prepared to make significant positive impacts in the world. Riverdale actively seeks educators and leaders who uphold a student-centered approach, demonstrate passion for their work, and show a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). The role of Cook at Riverdale Country School is integral to supporting the school community by assisting in the preparation of meals within the kitchen environment. Reporting to the Executive Sous Chef and the management team, the Cook is responsible for a variety of kitchen tasks, including setting up workstations, preparing ingredients, and cooking meals according to established recipes. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with both hot and cold food preparation and possess a solid understanding of diverse cuisines and cultural foods, with a focus on sustainable sourcing. This position requires attention to detail, as the Cook must evaluate food quality, ensure proper food storage and safety standards, and maintain cleanliness throughout the kitchen. The Cook will actively participate in food production, manage timing for meal preparation, and help maintain production records such as food usage and customer counts. Collaboration and communication are vital, as the Cook will work closely with the management team and kitchen staff to meet the needs of the school’s event schedule, which may require flexibility in work hours including some evenings and weekends. Physical stamina and the ability to operate various kitchen equipment safely—from ovens and grills to knives and food slicers—are essential for this role. The Cook will also interact with students, faculty, and staff, making professionalism, discretion, and a positive attitude key components of daily work life. A preference is given to candidates holding ServSafe Certification, and willingness to maintain a NYC Department of Health Food Protection Certificate is expected. This is a full-time, 10-month position with hours typically from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The hourly wage ranges from $22 to $26 depending on experience and qualifications. There may be opportunity for side work during summer months when available.
