The role of a Pilot Instructor at FlightSafety International is a pivotal position within the organization. This role focuses on delivering ground-based training to C-17 pilots, covering all essential aspects from air drop procedures to aerial refueling and transport operations. The Pilot Instructor is deeply involved in the entire training lifecycle, which includes instructing, evaluating, counseling, and maintaining the proficiency of crewmembers. They work extensively with various training devices such as Weapon System Trainers, Computer-Based Trainers, and actual aircraft to provide well-rounded instruction.
Beyond instruction, the Pilot Instructor supports administrative efforts including student progress monitoring, training program maintenance, and interfacing with operational units. They contribute to the continuous improvement of training materials and policies by providing valuable feedback and participating in curriculum reviews and evaluations. This role also requires maintaining hands-on expertise by flying simulation devices and occasionally flying on the C-17 aircraft themselves to remain current on operational procedures.
As subject matter experts, Pilot Instructors play a crucial role in ensuring the highest standards of training quality and operational readiness. They participate in leadership activities such as serving as Flight Check Airmen and evaluators for community college credit programs. They may also engage in safety, security, and hazardous materials responsibilities, reflecting the multifaceted nature of the position.
Successful candidates for this role will have a strong background in aviation with substantial experience as C-17 pilots, including practical exposure to air drop and aerial refueling operations. They must possess excellent communication skills and an ability to effectively teach complex subjects while maintaining a collaborative and professional environment. Holding an active SECRET Security Clearance is a mandatory requirement to carry out duties involving sensitive information.

- Bachelor’s degree
- Eight years flying experience
- Five years as a C-17 pilot with air drop and aerial refueling experience or able to obtain an AMC/A3TK waiver
- Two years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics
- Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience preferred
- Ability to fluently read, write, speak, and understand English
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of instructional principles and theories
- Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications
- Successful completion of internal standardization evaluations
- Possession of an active SECRET Security Clearance
