This part-time position, working 32 hours per week during the first shift on weekdays, involves a diverse range of responsibilities centered around patient registration, education, financial counseling, and staff training. The specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations across all CCOC locations by supporting Patient Access Services and Clinics.
The Patient Access Specialist is responsible for training new and current staff members in patient access functions including registration, insurance verification, scheduling (including telehealth and total joint classes), and cross-departmental coverage within various service lines such as Rehab Services, Radiology, Quick Care, Hospital, and Surgery Centers. The role demands a high level of attention to detail to maintain the accuracy and confidentiality of patient data in systems like Cerner and Centricity.
Key duties include conducting patient and guarantor interviews to explain hospital policies, financial responsibilities, and patients’ rights and privacy practices. This specialist verifies insurance eligibility, manages patient check-ins by ensuring all necessary documentation is collected, signed, and digitized, and performs advanced insurance verification when automated systems do not provide sufficient answers. They must also stay current on patient access procedures including pre-registration, charge entry, insurance authorizations, and outpatient scheduling to efficiently address staffing and scheduling needs.
Additionally, the Patient Access Specialist delivers financial counseling to uninsured or underinsured patients, helping them understand their benefits and out-of-pocket expenses. This professional serves as a mentor and coach, providing continuous education, individualized training sessions, and ongoing support to front desk and scheduling staff. Performance improvement efforts and quality initiatives are integral components of this position, as is maintaining strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
