The position available is for a full-time Sous Chef working Sunday through Thursday in the morning shift with varying hours. The pay range for this role is $20.75 to $22.25 per hour. The Sous Chef role plays a crucial part in ensuring the culinary experience at Oakmont of Santa Clarita meets the highest standards of quality and service. As a key member of the culinary team, the Sous Chef is responsible for preparing food according to approved menus and property policies, adhering to current standards, guidelines, and regulations. In the absence of the Culinary Services Director, the Sous Chef takes on the responsibility of managing the overall operations of the Culinary Department, ensuring that quality food service is maintained at all times.
This role requires overseeing the preparation, presentation, and service of meals to ensure they meet the expectations of residents, family members, and visitors in terms of menu selection, taste, and quality. The Sous Chef actively participates in food preparation for special events, activities, and marketing initiatives to enhance the community dining experience. Safety and sanitation are paramount, and the Sous Chef ensures compliance with sanitary regulations and property policies related to food handling and storage.
Among the duties, the Sous Chef assists in planning and executing culinary procedures to make certain food is prepared on time and maintained at proper temperatures. They help control food portions, estimate requirements accurately to minimize waste, and maintain consistency in meal quality. The role also involves inventory management, including purchasing, stocking, and organizing food and supplies in collaboration with the Culinary Services Director. The Sous Chef ensures the kitchen environment is sanitary and organized while also training culinary staff in food receiving procedures.
An essential part of the role is to connect with residents personally to understand their preferences and tailor the culinary services accordingly, providing a personalized and enjoyable dining experience. The Sous Chef must be flexible, adaptive, and capable of making decisions in stressful situations while prioritizing tasks efficiently. This position also requires proficiency in operating standard cooking and office equipment and computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

- Must be eighteen years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Prefer six months of experience working in a restaurant or similar environment as a cook
- Able to safely operate standard cooking equipment and utensils
- Able to operate a personal computer and be proficient in MS Office programs
- Able to operate standard office equipment including fax machine, copier, telephone
- Able to work with seniors and patiently interact with cognitively impaired individuals
- Able to be flexible, adapt and respond to change, make decisions in stressful situations, and prioritize tasks
- Must pass a criminal background check and health screening tests, including physical and TB tests
- Comply with vaccination, daily screening, surveillance testing, and PPE use per regulatory guidelines
