This job opportunity invites candidates to become HERO Operators based in the Odessa/Midland, Texas area. The position offers a starting pay of $20.00 per hour with the availability of overtime shifts, making it a viable full-time career option for individuals looking to make a meaningful difference in their communities. The HERO Operator role supports the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) by operating the free HERO patrol service program. The core mission of this program is to enhance highway safety and minimize traffic congestion by clearing damaged and disabled vehicles, removing debris from the travel and emergency lanes, and providing traffic control and scene protection at incidents.
As a HERO Operator, you will be a frontline responder working closely with TxDOT, local law enforcement, and other first responders on a daily basis. This collaboration ensures the swift and safe resolution of incidents on Texas highways, which is vital for protecting the traveling public and improving traffic flow.
The role involves a variety of critical duties that include assisting motorists in distress, performing incident management services, and communicating effectively with Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operators, emergency services, and towing providers using radios, telephones, and computer-aided dispatch systems. HERO Operators carry out essential roadside services such as clearing lane-blocking incidents, establishing traffic control zones with appropriate signage, cones, flags, and lights, and providing basic first aid until professional emergency responders arrive.
Physical demands are significant in this role. Operators must be able to lift and carry heavy loads continuously, walk extensive distances on interstate highways in various weather conditions, and safely operate a pickup truck with a trailer. The job also includes performing minor mechanical tasks like changing flat tires, adding air or gasoline, jump-starting vehicles, and pushing vehicles when needed. It is a physically active role that requires resilience, alertness, and a commitment to safety.

- High school diploma or its equivalent
- Valid driver's license with good driving record
- Available to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to speak English language
- Ability to work 12hr shifts including occasional weekends
- Ability to lift/carry 50lbs continuously and up to 100lbs assisted
- Ability to walk interstate/patrolled roadways unassisted 10-12hrs a day in all weather conditions
- Ability to safely operate a pickup truck with a 20-30 foot trailer in tow
- Physically able to access the underside of a vehicle
- Minimum age requirement of 21
- Ability to pass preemployment criminal history check and drug screen
- Ability to pass 2 year DOT medical evaluation
