The Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor will work under general direction to supervise employees and manage the maintenance operations related to installing, upgrading, and maintaining the city's traffic signs and pavement markings. The role requires careful management and coordination of work crews, contractors, and collaboration with a variety of stakeholders, including city staff, public citizens, and other government agencies. The supervisor will generate precise electronic work orders based on guidelines from the Transportation Operations Engineer, align work plans with maintenance needs and changing transportation conditions, and play a key role in analyzing traffic sign and pavement marking placement for safety and efficiency. They will have responsibility for responding to public concerns, mediating discussions, and executing street overlay projects, including ordering materials, monitoring contractor performance, and conducting final inspections. Supervision and leadership responsibilities include managing up to five staff members within the Sign Shop, including maintenance lead technicians and maintenance personnel, overseeing daily operations, evaluating employee performance, and ensuring workplace safety standards. The role involves continuous coaching and training to maintain technical proficiency and productivity. Administrative duties include budget management, purchasing and inventory control of materials and equipment, policy participation, and collaborative decision-making as part of the transportation operations management team. The supervisor will also handle claims related to traffic control devices in coordination with the City Attorney's Office. This position demands a high degree of professionalism, excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to provide exceptional customer service, and a commitment to public safety. The supervisor must be adept in applying the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices criteria, using various software tools such as GIS-based asset management systems, CAD, and Microsoft Office applications. Certifications from organizations such as the International Municipal Signal Association and the American Traffic Safety Services Association are essential or must be obtained during the probationary period.
