The role of Correctional Food Service Officer I within the Department of Adult Correction is crucial in maintaining the food service operations at correctional institutions. This position supervises offenders who perform large-scale food production and food service duties. The role requires effective verbal and written communication skills to ensure clear instructions are given and followed, which is indispensable for smooth department functions. Officers in this role are responsible for managing food preparation, sanitization practices, and maintaining food service equipment, as well as ensuring the nutritional quality of meals served within the correctional environment. Being knowledgeable about menu specifications and inventory management is also necessary, as is timely ordering and rotation of food and cleaning supplies.
The department offers this position with three levels: Correctional Food Service Officer I, II, and III, distinguished by the relative custody levels of offenders supervised: Minimum, Medium, and Close, respectively. This position is full-time and includes shifts that may rotate or be fixed, including nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required. The starting salary ranges from $32,639 to $57,117 for the Correctional Food Service Officer I level, with higher salary scales for levels II and III. Eligible candidates may also qualify for sign-on bonuses and referral bonuses, providing additional incentives for qualified applicants. Being eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission is also a necessary qualification for appointment.
