This specific opportunity is for a Sushi Chef position within Hy-Vee's Asian Department, a specialized segment focused on delivering authentic and fresh Asian cuisine options. The Sushi Chef plays a critical role in preparing and filling customer orders with fresh sushi, both packaged and made-to-order. In addition to food preparation, this role requires handling food safely by adhering to proper sanitation practices and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. The Sushi Chef is also responsible for ordering and receiving sushi products, verifying order accuracy, labeling, dating, and stocking items appropriately. The Sushi Chef fosters a positive company image through courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service by engaging directly with customers and team members. This involves greeting customers warmly, learning their names, providing helpful information, and answering questions to enhance their overall shopping experience. Communication skills are vital since the chef will also assist customers by escorting them to products, retrieving items, and listening carefully to their suggestions or requests. Collaboration with co-workers is essential, as the Sushi Chef supports team training activities to ensure customer satisfaction and a harmonious work environment. The role involves schedule management and food ordering planning within the department to keep operations running smoothly. The Sushi Chef helps in merchandising tasks, including arranging sushi displays attractively and preparing for fresh sushi demonstrations to engage customers. This is a non-exempt, hourly position with a competitive starting wage range of $18.00 to $22.50 per hour, dependent on experience. • Must be 18 or older
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Food Safety Certified
• One to three years of related experience
• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds constantly
• Visual acuity including depth perception, color vision, and field of vision
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen
