Marion County Public Works is a dedicated department committed to serving the community through the maintenance and operation of various public infrastructure systems. Located in Salem, Oregon, the Public Works Department specifically focuses on roads, bridges, drainage, traffic control, environmental sites, and other essential public facilities. The Roads and Bridges Operations Division is an integral part of this department tasked with ensuring the safety, maintenance, and functionality of Marion County’s transportation systems. This division is responsible for performing routine maintenance, cleaning, repair, and operational support for roads, bridges, ferries, and related infrastructure. It plays an important role in keeping Marion County’s transportation network safe, accessible, and efficient for residents and visitors alike. Marion County Public Works is currently seeking a full-time, regular Maintenance Worker/Toll Taker to join the dynamic Wheatland Ferry operations crew. This position offers an hourly salary range of $20.58 to $27.53 and requires on-site work in Salem, Oregon, as remote work is not available. The Maintenance Worker/Toll Taker will collaborate closely with ferry operators to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the Wheatland Ferry. Responsibilities include securing the ferry, directing traffic, collecting tolls, making change, and assisting with opening and closing procedures. Additionally, the role involves performing minor maintenance and repairs to keep the ferry vessels in optimal condition. Beyond ferry operations, this position will support other operational work groups within the Roads and Bridges Division as needed. These groups are responsible for maintaining various roadway features throughout the Marion County community, such as bridges, guardrails, pavements, drainage systems, traffic signage, pavement markings, roadside vegetation, litter control, and responses to inclement weather events. The role requires versatility and willingness to work in diverse work environments and conditions, including outdoors in all weather situations. The ideal candidate for this position brings a combination of experience in cash handling, customer service, and maintenance or construction activities related to buildings, facilities, landscaping, or equipment. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, a valid Class C driver’s license with a demonstrated safe driving record of at least two years is required. The Maintenance Worker/Toll Taker will work under the supervision of a crew leader, supervisor, or lead worker who assigns tasks and ensures adherence to department standards. While supervision of other employees is not a key responsibility, aiding in peer instruction is sometimes necessary. This position is essential to Marion County’s transportation operations, including emergency response efforts like ice, snow control, flooding, and other natural events impacting public infrastructure. Candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check, post-offer drug screening (including marijuana testing), and a physical examination with an agility evaluation. Extensive training, including safety, traffic control, hazardous materials awareness, and incident command system training, will be provided. The work schedule is primarily Friday through Tuesday with 5 to 8-hour shifts, offering some scheduling flexibility to meet the needs of the department and programs.
