The Jr. Sous position at Urban Plates is an entry-level leadership role designed for team members who aspire to grow into management positions within the restaurant. Reporting to the General Manager and working within the operations department, this role plays a critical part in maintaining high culinary standards and seamless kitchen operations. The Jr. Sous supports the management team by ensuring excellent food quality, proper presentation, and the effective execution of menu items. With a pay rate ranging from $17.81 to $18.75 per hour, plus average tips of $3.09 to $3.23 per hour, this non-exempt role offers a competitive compensation package for those entering the leadership track.
The responsibilities of this position are diverse and include receiving food and packaging orders, opening and closing the kitchen, expediting orders, and assembling take-out orders with care. The Jr. Sous ensures organization, cleanliness, and sanitation of all food-related work areas and equipment, enhancing both safety and efficiency. Candidates in this role are expected to demonstrate strong culinary techniques including knife skills, manage food and labor costs in conjunction with the Chef and Sous Chef, and uphold safety standards rigorously. This role also involves maintaining inventory accuracy, labeling and rotating stock for freshness and compliance, and ensuring that all kitchen stations are prepared and supplied ahead of service.
Beyond culinary duties, the Jr. Sous serves as a frontline leader by setting the tone for each shift, overseeing team member breaks according to labor regulations, and interacting with guests and team members to address concerns effectively. An ability to work well under pressure, problem-solve efficiently, and communicate clearly is essential. This leader also takes charge of securing the restaurant premises during closing hours, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and the environment is ready for the next day. - High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- 1-2 years of food service or hospitality industry experience preferred
