The role of Lead Bartender at Courtyard Santa Barbara Downtown is a vital position within the food and beverage department, designed for individuals passionate about hospitality and skilled in mixology. This is a full-time or part-time position offering an hourly wage between $18.00 and $19.50. The Lead Bartender not only delivers friendly, courteous, and efficient food and beverage service to all guests but also plays a supervisory role over beverage staff during shifts. The Lead Bartender supports the Director of Food & Beverage, Executive Chef, and Food & Beverage Manager in leadership responsibilities, ensuring operational excellence and maintaining high service standards.
Key responsibilities include the preparation of high-quality, freshly crafted cocktails at high volume using proper technique, taking beverage and food orders directly at the bar, and providing knowledgeable descriptions and recommendations to customers. The role involves assisting with the management and direction of the craft spirit, wine, and beer programs and the creation of a craft cocktail menu emphasizing classical mixology methods. The Lead Bartender collaborates with management to manage costs effectively by controlling inventory levels, preventing spillage, and developing high-margin beverage programs.
Maintaining service standards is paramount, and the Lead Bartender trains the bartending team on service techniques, product knowledge, and behavioral standards. The position requires ensuring the availability and correct usage of bar materials such as garnishes, infusions, syrups, bitters, and other modifiers. The lead also prepares house-made spirit infusions, develops vendor relationships for top-quality products, and enforces alcohol beverage control protocols consistently among the staff.
Operational duties extend to cash handling, processing credit card and room charges, maintaining cleanliness from start to finish of a shift, restocking inventory, conducting opening and closing inventories, and securing all liquor, beer, and wine products. The Lead Bartender plays a safety oversight role during deep cleaning activities and ensures all equipment like taps, coolers, blenders, and coffee makers are functioning correctly.
Customer service is emphasized, requiring the Lead Bartender to verify legal drinking ages, refuse service to minors or intoxicated guests, and resolve inquiries professionally and courteously. Physical demands of the job include standing for long periods, maneuvering in restricted spaces, handling heavy loads, and adapting to a temperature-controlled environment with occasional extremes such as freezer or kitchen temperatures.
Candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, leadership abilities, organizational acumen, and basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Windows OS, MS Office, PMS, and POS systems. Experience with high volume bar operations is required, along with supervisory experience preferred. The position mandates a high school education or equivalent, relevant bartending certifications, and compliance with grooming and attendance policies to maintain the hotel's standards.
