The Trip Pilot role is a critical position within ACBL’s operational framework, responsible for guiding vessels safely and efficiently through challenging riverways. Based in multiple strategic locations including Memphis, TN; St. Louis, MO; Cairo, IL; Convent, LA; Harahan, LA; Channelview, TX; and Jeffersonville, IN, this full-time position offers a compelling opportunity to join a respected marine transportation enterprise with a proud tradition. As a Trip Pilot at ACBL, you will take on significant responsibilities, including navigation of vessels during your watch in line with company safety protocols, instructing crew members on job performance and safety, and serving as the vessel security officer under the Vessel Security Plan. You will ensure all crew members have a comprehensive understanding of barge cargoes and associated risks, enforce company policies and safety management systems, supervise crew performance, and participate in budget management to maximize cost efficiency. Your duties will also include maintaining communication through radio watch, reporting hazardous cargos to the Inland River Vessel Movement Center as required, managing assignments for mates and lead deckhands, and ensuring compliance with vessel management procedures. This role demands a strong sense of responsibility, leadership skills, and the capability to work in various weather conditions while maintaining a vigilant focus on safety and operational standards. Candidates must hold a Master of Towing Vessels license valid for Western Rivers, have significant experience running large barge tows (30+ barges) especially on the Lower Mississippi River, and meet strict USCG physical examination criteria. The job requires flexibility for travel, valid driver’s license, and the ability to maintain active USCG licensing and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Experience managing tows of 20 or more barges is highly preferred.
