The Senior Park Aide (Seasonal) position at the San Juan Bautista State Historic Park offers an exciting opportunity to be involved directly with visitor services and educational programming within an iconic California State Park setting. This intermittent, non-tenured role involves working up to 189 days or 1500 hours in a consecutive 12-month period, with a competitive hourly wage range of $20.90 to $25.15 for new State hires. Under the supervision of a State Parks Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger), the Senior Park Aide will serve as a primary customer service representative, engaging daily with park visitors to provide information, facilitate group reservations, and promote educational tours and school programs. The role requires a passion for historic preservation, community engagement, and public safety.
Typical responsibilities include greeting and assisting visitors at entrance stations or park counters, answering questions both in person and by phone regarding park amenities and programs, coordinating school group reservations using the Reserve-California system, and maintaining close communication with Mission San Juan Bautista to confirm special requests and facilitate group visits. The role may also involve operating state vehicles and off-highway vehicles following training, supporting special events, and occasionally traveling to assist other park units or outreach efforts.
This position demands a readiness to work in various outdoor conditions, from extreme temperatures to exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, and odors. Physically, it requires frequent walking, standing, sitting, and the ability to lift up to 35 pounds. Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and special events is essential, as is willingness to meet the standard background checks and live scan fingerprint clearance required for State employment. A valid California driver's license with a safe driving record is mandatory.
