SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation) is a premier provider of technical, engineering, and enterprise IT services for the U.S. government. Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, SAIC is known for delivering advanced systems engineering and information technology solutions across complex government programs. With a workforce of over 25,000 employees, the company has established itself as a trusted partner offering a broad range of highly specialized technology services. SAIC is committed to driving innovation and providing superior mission-critical capabilities to federal clients, ensuring national security, operational excellence, and technology advancement.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of more than 50,000 daily flights across the vast U.S. National Airspace System. To maintain such a high standard of safety, the FAA employs over 14,000 air traffic controllers who work tirelessly to separate aircraft and protect the flying public. Training new air traffic controllers and providing recurrent training to experienced specialists are vital components to maintaining this safety record. The FAA partners with contractors like SAIC to deliver comprehensive training services designed to prepare air traffic controllers for real-world challenges.
SAIC is seeking an experienced Controller Training Solutions (CTS) Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) to join its team stationed at the FAA Regional Training Site in Denver, Colorado. This is a full-time role focused on delivering high-quality air traffic controller training services specifically designed for the FAA. The Remote Pilot Operator serves a critical function within air traffic controller training simulators, acting as virtual pilots and other controllers. Utilizing a simulated radar display combined with advanced voice communication systems, the RPO replicates pilot actions and voice communications during realistic medium and high-fidelity training exercises.
In this role, the RPO listens to voice commands issued by trainee controllers, inputs proper commands into an automated system to simulate pilot responses, and accurately translates displayed flight information into precise air traffic control terminology. Additionally, the RPO must respond promptly and clearly to trainees using proper phraseology over the voice communication system to ensure immersive, authentic training experiences. Candidates will be required to complete rigorous certifications including classroom training on airspace and procedures (with a passing test) and hands-on lab certification demonstrating operational proficiency across all remote pilot operator positions.
SAIC’s Remote Pilot Operator position is not related to operating Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or drones. Instead, it focuses entirely on simulated air traffic control training scenarios. The role demands a high degree of accuracy, communication skills, and attention to detail. Prospective candidates need to be capable of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams consisting of multimedia developers, quality assurance professionals, instructional system designers, subject matter experts, and instructors. This teamwork ensures the delivery of cutting-edge training solutions conforming to FAA standards and operational requirements.
This is a vital position supporting the FAA's mission to maintain the highest level of safety and professionalism in air traffic control operations by preparing controllers through realistic, scenario-based training. The target salary range for this position is $40,001 to $80,000 per year, reflecting experience and other relevant factors. Candidates must be U.S. citizens able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance. The position requires basic computer proficiency, strong communication skills, and familiarity with FAA orders and pilot-controller communications, though certain certifications are strongly desired but not required. Working in a stimulating environment at the intersection of aviation safety, technology, and training, the Remote Pilot Operator contributes directly to the efficiency and safety of U.S. airspace operations.
