The Materials Management group at VAI is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Logistics Manager to lead and oversee the Institute’s logistics operations. This full-time role focuses on coordinating all aspects of shipping, receiving, internal distribution, and related processes supporting both domestic and international activities. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role, driving strategic direction and operational excellence across the logistics function. They will manage complex regulations related to trade compliance, hazardous and regulated materials, and customs brokerage to ensure smooth and safe logistics flow at VAI.
The Logistics Manager is responsible for establishing and monitoring workflow plans to guarantee efficient, timely, and compliant handling of all shipments. This role serves as the primary administrator for all logistics and shipping software platforms, providing configuration oversight and user support to streamline operations. Additionally, the manager will lead, mentor, and develop logistics staff, creating a culture that emphasizes accountability, teamwork, and continuous process improvement.
Day-to-day duties also include analyzing vendor performance, negotiating service agreements, managing staffing coverage, resolving operational challenges, and preparing reports to monitor performance metrics and compliance. The Logistics Manager will act as the primary contact for complex shipments and regulatory inquiries, coordinating with transportation providers, customs brokers, and government agencies. They will also stay current with evolving trade regulations and institutional policies to uphold best practices.
An ideal candidate for this position is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage projects independently while maintaining a strategic view of the overall logistics function. Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills are essential, alongside a proven ability to lead teams and deliver results in a dynamic environment.

                - bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain, business, or related field required
 - minimum of 5-10 years of progressive experience in logistics, supply chain, or related field, with direct responsibility for domestic and international shipping and compliance
 - customs brokerage experience strongly preferred
 - excellent negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills
 - strong knowledge of regulatory compliance, trade regulations, and safety requirements
 - proficiency with ERP systems and shipping/logistics management software, including reporting and operational tracking tools
 - experience working in an academic, nonprofit, or research environment preferred
