Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) is a prominent government agency responsible for managing and operating major airports serving the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. MWAA is committed to ensuring the safety, security, and efficiency of airport operations, providing world-class facilities and services to millions of travelers annually. As an agency dedicated to public safety and transportation infrastructure, MWAA supports a range of critical functions such as airport security, emergency response, and public safety communications to safeguard travelers, staff, and assets within its jurisdiction. The Emergency Communications Technician II position is a vital full-performance role within MWAA's Public Safety Communications Center located at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. This role encompasses comprehensive 9-1-1 communications duties including call taking, dispatching police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS), and maintaining critical communication links between emergency responders and dispatchers. The technician is responsible for receiving, creating, processing, and relaying both emergency and non-emergency calls via state-of-the-art public safety communication equipment such as Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and dedicated radio channels. As an Emergency Communications Technician II, you will be the communication nexus during emergency situations, directing first responder units promptly and accurately across Airports Authority locations and mutual aid jurisdictions including Dulles Toll Road and Access Roads. This role demands the ability to multitask effectively—answering calls, dispatching units, updating logs, and communicating with multiple responders simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. You will also monitor and respond to high-priority security alarms by conducting camera reviews, contacting the alarm initiator, or dispatching police units. The position requires adherence to precise broadcast procedures and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service to internal staff, external partners, and the traveling public. Technicians are responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting communication equipment to ensure operational readiness. Continued skill enhancement is supported through mandatory in-service, basic, advanced, and specialized training courses. Furthermore, technicians provide credible testimony when required and must maintain a professional demeanor under pressure. The salary range for this role is competitive, ranging from $28.00 to $46.20 per hour, with a work schedule that involves rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and availability for special events or emergency holdovers. This structure supports round-the-clock public safety communication needs while offering shift flexibility through a bidding system based on seniority. The job demands passing several assessments including online skills tests, psychological evaluations, and, for new hires, comprehensive medical examinations. Joining MWAA as an Emergency Communications Technician II means playing a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of one of the nation's busiest airport networks. Your work directly impacts public safety outcomes every day, offering a meaningful and challenging career in emergency response communications within a highly respected public agency.
