Our organization places a high premium on safety and consistent, effective communication, ensuring that every student’s journey is handled with care and professionalism. The role of a Bus Dispatcher at Durham School Services is vital to our mission of safe and efficient student transportation. This full-time position involves directing and monitoring daily assignments by scheduling drivers, bus assistants, and assigning vehicles to cover all routes, field trips, and charter work. The dispatcher ensures that all activities are carried out on-time and communicates all relevant route and driving assignment details to drivers to guarantee proper execution of services. This position requires quick problem solving, multitasking, and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining exceptional customer service standards. The dispatcher also acts as a crucial liaison in emergency situations by responding promptly to calls, coordinating mechanical services, and assigning replacements as needed to minimize service disruptions. The dispatcher is responsible for maintaining thorough route documentation, including contract requirements, school information, student data, maps, vehicle details, and driver records to provide accurate and reliable information consistent with district and state regulations. Collaborating with maintenance supervisors to ensure uninterrupted vehicle service, upholding strict compliance with dispatch standard operating procedures, and managing customer concerns professionally are key aspects of the role. Additionally, the position includes handling sensitive personnel matters such as recommending disciplinary action for violations, escalating unresolved issues to management, and promoting ethical behavior among team members. Fluency in routing software and Microsoft Office is essential, as well as the ability to manage communication systems including two-way and emergency radios. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize competing demands, and a proactive approach to safety and service quality. Durham School Services offers a comprehensive benefits package that reflects our commitment to employee well-being, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, holiday pay, paid time off (PTO) accrual, and retirement savings plans. Employment terms, including pay rates, may vary based on geographical location, customer contracts, and position. Our workplace fosters equal opportunity, supporting diversity and inclusion without discrimination or bias, and we hold a zero-tolerance policy for conduct that conflicts with our values or endangers children and passengers.
