The Service Engineer role at Smiths Detection primarily involves providing on-site technical support across locations in and around the Detroit area, including airport facilities. This position is critical in ensuring customer satisfaction by meeting daily service repair needs through the installation, repair, and maintenance of detection and screening equipment. The engineer will also provide necessary customer training and document all inspections and repairs thoroughly while managing repair parts and cycles efficiently. This role requires active participation in service sales opportunities and the promotion of revenue programs, demonstrating a blend of technical expertise and customer service orientation. The successful candidate will maintain tools and test equipment in proper working order and calibrate them as needed, assess equipment performance based on field data, and recommend improvements to maximize operational efficiency. Collaboration with senior Field Service Engineers and Product Managers is essential to keep abreast of technical trends and enhance service delivery. The position demands flexibility, as travel and overtime may be required beyond standard working hours. In addition, the engineer must comply with company health, safety, environmental policies, and U.S. export control and security regulations. The role requires a physically and mentally capable individual who can lift and manipulate heavy equipment and work in various challenging environments safely. Starting salary ranges from $42,000 to $98,000 annually, dependent on experience and qualifications, along with a competitive profit plan and benefits package. - High school diploma or equivalent
- associate degree related trade certification or military training electrical mechanical electronics or equivalent work experience of 1-3 years in a related electrical or mechanical field service role
- minimum of 1-3 years experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical and electronic systems
- excellent communication and customer service skills
- ability to travel frequently and at short notice
- ability to lift 80 lbs and push or pull 200 lbs
- ability to move equipment up to 1000 lbs with assistance
- ability to work in unusual positions and extreme environments
- ability to pass federal background investigation and TSA vetting for Sensitive Security Information access
