The Customs Entry Writer position is offered by a specialized customs brokerage and freight forwarding company dedicated to facilitating the smooth clearance of goods through U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This organization serves as a critical intermediary between various stakeholders involved in the shipment process, including airlines, shipping companies, trucking companies, shippers, consignees, bonded warehouses, and government authorities. Their expertise lies in compliance with complex customs regulations, ensuring that shipments meet all legal requirements for entry into the United States.
As a company, they are committed to providing professional customs clearance services, streamlining the import process for their clients while adhering to all applicable laws and regulations. Their business model revolves around accurate documentation, efficient handling of customs entries, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes affecting international trade. By leveraging experienced personnel and technological tools, they ensure that shipments are processed expediently and cost-effectively.
The role of the Customs Entry Writer is integral to the company's operations. This position focuses on preparing, compiling, and managing all documentation and records necessary to clear goods through CBP. Acting as an intermediary, the Customs Entry Writer negotiates and coordinates between airlines, freight forwarders, shippers, consignees, warehouses, and customs officials to facilitate compliance and proper entry of goods. Responsibilities include making U.S. customs entries under legal guidelines, ensuring that all entries comply with U.S. Customs law, and verifying the accuracy and completeness of all required documentation.
A considerable part of the role involves using knowledge of CBP rules and regulations to classify goods correctly and determine applicable duty rates. The Customs Entry Writer must be familiar with a variety of entry types such as Formal entries, Informal entries, Warehouse Entry/Withdrawal, Carnets, Temporary Importation Bonds (TIB), Immediate Exportation (IE), and Temporary Exportation (T&E), among others. This expertise allows the professional to handle diverse shipments efficiently and in compliance with regulatory standards.
The position requires meticulous examination of shipment documents to confirm accuracy concerning reporting requirements like entered value, country of origin, terms of sale, and statistical quantities (SLAC count). It also includes maintaining current knowledge of CBP regulations, as well as other related government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). This comprehensive scope ensures compliance with importation and transportation regulations, particularly for goods such as hazardous materials, food products, and live animals.
Customer service is another important component of the job, as the Customs Entry Writer is responsible for corresponding with customs partners and overseas contacts through emails, fax, and other communication channels. The role also involves processing automated clearing house (ACH) payments to CBP, updating customer and importer profiles, and performing additional duties as required by management.
To succeed, candidates must possess at least a high school diploma or GED and have a minimum of three years of experience in importing or freight forwarding. Training in ISO standards and proficiency with Microsoft applications are essential, alongside the ability to conduct paperless entries through the CBP computer system. Physical requirements are minimal but include the ability to perform light work such as lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally and sufficient near vision to accurately read and write information.
