As a Cook-05 at the U.S. Coast Guard Community Services Command, you will play a crucial role in preparing a variety of menu items including hamburgers, grilled sandwiches, eggs, quick meals, cold sandwiches, and salads. This role involves operating various kitchen equipment that functions with gas, electricity, steam, or microwave heat sources. Responsibilities include grilling or frying items such as steaks, chops, poultry, pancakes, bacon, and sausage by closely monitoring cooking processes and ensuring quality and safety standards are met. You will also prepare fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables and fruits as directed and assist in making desserts, juices, and other food items under the guidance of higher-grade cooks. Maintaining the duty to properly store food items, verify food supplies, and assist in monthly inventories are critical components of this job. The position requires maintaining a clean and orderly work environment, adhering to fire, safety, sanitation, and security regulations, and practicing a ‘clean as you go’ concept to ensure all kitchen utensils and equipment are properly sanitized and maintained throughout shifts. Additionally, cooks may be asked to perform bar-related duties, including stocking beer coolers and setting up service bars. This role demands physical capability to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and stand for extended periods while upholding rigorous standards in food preparation and kitchen maintenance.
