The Rail Flaw Detection Operator role at Sperry Rail Service is a challenging and vital position that demands a high level of responsibility, physical endurance, and technical aptitude. This is a full-time, heavy travel position in which candidates must be prepared to spend 3 to 4 months at a time traveling within either the eastern or western United States regions. The role involves operating specialized test vehicles known as detector cars, which are modified to travel on railroad tracks, performing inspections, maintenance, and data interpretation tasks essential to the safety and performance of railway track infrastructure.
Operators are required to handle the vehicle operations, execute equipment setups, and utilize various diagnostic and testing tools. They must perform rigorous vehicle and equipment inspections, including crawling under the vehicle in tight spaces with minimal clearance and navigating steps and ladders multiple times daily. The position is physically demanding, requiring agility, strength, and endurance to squat, kneel, crawl, and maintain awkward postures while ensuring the train and equipment are functioning optimally.
Safety is paramount for this role, with strict adherence to all company safety policies and procedures required to maintain a safe working environment. Personal protective equipment, including steel-toed boots, hard hats, safety glasses, and vests, are mandatory. Operators must also be trained annually in Road Worker Safety.
