The Cafeteria Worker I position at Glendale Unified involves entry-level, repetitive meal preparation and service within the school cafeteria environment. This role includes tasks such as assembling sandwiches, serving meals on the line, cleaning kitchen equipment, heating prepared food, and operating a point-of-sale computer terminal. The employee will be closely supervised by higher-level food service personnel and will not have any supervisory responsibilities over other staff members. The role is essential to maintaining a smooth and efficient food service operation that ensures students receive nutritious meals in a timely manner.
This position requires knowledge of general food preparation practices and kitchen equipment, the ability to wash, heat, cut, and assemble food items according to health and sanitation standards, and the capacity to perform work efficiently during busy periods. Basic math skills are necessary for counting and simple calculations, along with the ability to follow oral and written instructions and work cooperatively with others. Physical requirements include lifting and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds. Glendale Unified values diversity and encourages bilingual skills, especially written and oral proficiency in a second language, as a desirable qualification.
Employees working 20 or more hours weekly are required to complete at least 6 hours of annual continuing education or training on topics such as free and reduced price eligibility, meal identification at the point of service, nutrition, health and safety standards, and other USDA Food Nutrition Services requirements to ensure program integrity. Those working fewer than 20 hours need to complete 4 hours annually. The district covers the cost of all required continuing education and training.
Prior to employment, candidates must provide proof of freedom from tuberculosis and complete a district-paid pre-employment physical exam, along with fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice.
