The City of Billings, located in Montana, is seeking a dedicated and reliable individual for the role of Facilities Maintenance Support I within the Billings Public Library, specifically in the Library Facilities division. The Facilities Maintenance Support I role is designed to ensure the cleanliness, sanitation, and general upkeep of public library facilities and grounds, adhering strictly to prescribed procedures under close supervision. The position involves a variety of routine tasks that contribute to a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for library patrons and staff. Scheduled work hours are from Tuesday through Friday, 5:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., and Saturdays from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., reflecting the need for evening and weekend coverage.
This position requires proficiency in using various cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, carpet cleaners, and polishers. The incumbent will handle cleaning chemicals safely, ensuring no harmful mixtures, perform waste and recycling material management including removal to appropriate collection areas, and maintain grounds by removing snow and treating icy conditions with salt or sand. Additional responsibilities include watering indoor and nearby outdoor plants, cleaning break and restroom areas, monitoring and removing graffiti, and participating in janitorial supplies inventory management, including ordering and storing supplies as necessary.
Beyond maintenance tasks, this role entails a vigilant observation of safety and security within the facility. The employee will report any safety hazards such as burnt out lights, unattended packages, or malfunctioning heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to appropriate personnel. The ability to assist with moving office partitions and furnishings and to provide routine assistance or direction to the public during events is also part of the job. Setup and teardown assistance for events, involving tables, chairs, or staging equipment, will also be expected.
Ideal candidates will have at least six months of general custodial experience or an equivalent background, alongside the ability to follow basic written instructions and simple diagrams. Courtesy and communication skills are important, as the role includes responding to basic public inquiries. A Montana driver’s license is required or must be obtained within 60 days of employment. Preference may be given to those who hold a high school diploma or GED.
The physical demands of the job include frequent moderate lifting and exposure to some disagreeable elements such as waste materials and odors. The position is mainly indoors but requires occasional work outdoors and possible intermittent driving.
