The Baker role at Hy-Vee is a vital position within the bakery department, responsible for preparing baked products to not only meet customer orders but also replenish bakery displays to ensure a fresh and appealing product selection throughout the day. This is a non-exempt position that offers an anticipated hourly wage ranging from $17.00 to $21.25 depending on experience, making it an accessible opportunity for individuals looking to build their culinary skills in a supportive, fast-paced retail environment. In this role, the baker is held accountable to several levels of management including the District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers, and most directly the Bakery Department Manager. Additionally, this position may involve supervising apprentices, bakery designers, wrappers, and fryers.
The baker’s primary responsibility is to provide courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service, embodying Hy-Vee's customer-focused values by offering a warm and helpful presence in every customer interaction. It entails greeting customers, assisting with product location, handling special orders, and maintaining a spotless work area while adhering to all food safety and sanitation standards. The baker manages the preparation and baking schedule daily, ensures all baked goods meet quality standards, and plays a key role in inventory management by inspecting incoming products and maintaining proper product labeling. Additionally, they handle the use and upkeep of bakery equipment, identify maintenance needs, and contribute to a safe work environment.
Beyond day-to-day baking duties, the baker may take on secondary responsibilities such as ordering department supplies, ensuring shelves are well-merchandised, managing staff attendance schedules in the bakery manager's absence, and assisting in other store areas as required. This role demands a strong ability to solve practical problems, do arithmetic calculations, and communicate effectively with both customers and team members. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and move heavy objects, perform repetitive motions, and endure exposure to temperature extremes and bakery-related environmental factors.
