The position available with Sperry Rail Service involves a critical role in operating specialized rail-bound vehicles used for detecting rail flaws, a vital component in maintaining the safety and reliability of railway networks. This full-time role demands extensive travel, often requiring candidates to commit to trips lasting 3 to 4 months within specified regions. Employees in this role will operate detector cars—either rail-bound vehicles resembling passenger cars or modified box trucks—to conduct inspections under a variety of weather and track conditions. The job includes driving the vehicles on and off railroad tracks, performing detailed equipment setups, and interpreting diagnostic data collected during tests.
In addition to vehicle operation, the role requires hands-on maintenance and repair of both the vehicles and the detection equipment, often in physically challenging postures such as crawling under vehicles or climbing ladders multiple times daily. Safety is paramount, with mandatory use of personal protective equipment like steel-toed boots, hard hats, and safety vests. Candidates must undergo annual Road Worker Safety training to comply with industry safety standards.
Successful candidates will play an integral part in ensuring rail infrastructure integrity by operating test equipment, recording precise data, maintaining vehicle functionality, and cooperating closely with rail personnel. Communication skills are essential, involving clear and concise verbal exchanges with pilots and crew members to ensure smooth operations and adherence to safety protocols. The job involves interpreting test data, monitoring track conditions, and responding to alarms or signals during vehicle operation.
