About Duke Life Flight
Duke Life Flight represents the critical care and emergency air and ground transport team within Duke Health. Accredited by the esteemed Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems, Duke Life Flight is staffed by an expert multidisciplinary team that includes paramedics, nurses, respiratory therapists, emergency medical technicians, and communications specialists. This dedicated team works swiftly to provide life-saving care and efficient transport services to critically ill patients of all age groups, ensuring timely medical interventions regardless of location. Beyond life-critical transports, Duke Life Flight maintains a Code Blue Response Team and also supports event medicine needs, demonstrating versatility in emergency and critical care transport services.
Duke University Health System is currently seeking to hire a Communications Specialist to join the Duke Life Flight team. This role is ideal for motivated individuals who are passionate about healthcare communication, emergency response coordination, and critical patient transport services. The Communication Specialist will operate within the Air Medical Communications Center, managing essential communication systems including phone lines, radio consoles, weather radar systems, complex computer databases, and advanced mapping technology. This position demands precise coordination skills, rapid decision-making, and a commitment to compassionate service as the specialist supports both air and ground transport missions. Working in close collaboration with medical staff, emergency responders, and various hospital departments, the Communications Specialist plays a pivotal role in facilitating seamless patient transfers and emergency response communications. The position follows a schedule of three 12-hour shifts and is based at Duke's facilities in Durham, North Carolina, with a planned future relocation to a new site within the city.
The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with at least one year of dispatching experience in relevant settings such as 911 control centers, fire or police dispatch, air traffic control, or hospital-based emergency operations. Certification is required, with options including North Carolina EMT licensure, National Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification, National Association of Air Communication Specialist (NAACS) Certified Communicator, International Association of Air Communication Specialist (IAMTC) certification, or Certified Flight Communicator (CFC) certification. Additionally, the selected specialist must obtain the Certified Flight Communicator (CFC) certification within one year of employment and demonstrate proficiency with software applications such as Flight Vector and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) within six months.
This role is fundamental to ensuring timely, accurate, and effective communication channels that support patient safety and successful emergency medical transport operations. - High school diploma or equivalent
- One year of dispatching experience in 911 control line, fire/police dispatching, air traffic control, hospital-based health or related setting
- Must have one of the following: North Carolina EMT licensure, National Emergency Medical Dispatcher EMD certification, National Association of Air Communication Specialist Certified Communicator (NAACS), International Association of Air Communication Specialist Certified Communicator (IAMTC), or Certified Flight Communicator (CFC) Certification
- Must obtain Certified Flight Communicator (CFC) certification within one year of employment
- Ability to learn Maestro and Dispatch software applications (Flight Vector and CAD)
- Master competencies in these areas within 6 months
- Evaluate progress in these areas within the 90 day probationary period
