The Housing & Residence Life (HRL) department is a self-supporting auxiliary organization within the University Life unit of the institution. HRL manages and maintains the residential life facilities that accommodate approximately 6,200 students residing in traditional, suite, and apartment-style residence halls spread over three campuses. With a workforce comprising over 170 full-time and graduate employees and more than 350 undergraduate staff, HRL is dedicated to delivering a safe, well-maintained, and student-focused living environment that supports a truly global community and enriches the overall student experience. The position of Housekeeper within HRL offers a full-time opportunity to join a dynamic team committed to maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of over 40 residence halls with a combined bed capacity exceeding 6,500. This role requires performing general custodial duties with direct supervision. The housekeeper is responsible for cleaning common areas such as hallways, stairwells, laundry rooms, balconies, sidewalks, bathrooms, and student rooms during transitions or move-outs. The work also includes trash removal, carpet shampooing, furniture movement, minor repairs, and installation tasks related to window treatments and light bulb replacement. Housekeepers are expected to adhere strictly to safety procedures and cleaning protocols, utilizing knowledge of hazardous cleaning chemicals and equipment operation. This position is considered essential during critical weather events and requires flexibility to work evening and weekend shifts on a rotating basis. The role is onsite, based in Fairfax, VA, and is classified under the Housekeeping & Apparel Worker 1 category within classified staff. The salary band starts in the mid $30,000 range, aligned with education and experience. George Mason University requires candidates to have a commitment to safety, professionalism, and effective communication skills to work collaboratively within the department and the wider campus community. Being bilingual in English and Spanish and previous experience in university residential or hotel housekeeping are preferred but not required.
