Gateway West Shelter is Albuquerque's largest shelter dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness. Open year-round, it provides a safe and welcoming environment for an average of 600 guests each night, with numbers increasing to over 700 during cold winter nights. The shelter offers essential services including nutritious meals, warm overnight beds, and secure under-bed storage for personal belongings. Additionally, guests benefit from daily shuttle services, facilitating easy access to the shelter and surrounding support networks.

The Shelter Supervisor role at Gateway West represents a pivotal leadership position focused on managing the daily operations of the shelter with an emphasis on safety, efficiency, and compassion. This full-time, overnight position runs from 10pm to 7am and requires availability on weekends and holidays to meet the needs of the shelter and its guests. The Supervisor will oversee shelter staff including case managers, intake coordinators, and support personnel, ensuring that all shifts are adequately staffed to maintain a supportive environment at all times.
A core responsibility of the Shelter Supervisor is fostering a trauma-informed, client-centered atmosphere. This includes actively engaging and empowering their team, facilitating training sessions to enhance staff skills, and conducting performance evaluations to promote professional growth. Additionally, the Supervisor will handle operational logistics, coordinate schedules, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards and shelter policies.
Successful candidates will bring expertise in crisis intervention and the ability to handle emergencies with compassion and professionalism. This leadership role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field, although relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Candidates should have 3-5 years of experience in social services or shelter management, including 1-2 years in a supervisory capacity. The Supervisor will play a critical role in advancing the shelter’s mission by ensuring a welcoming, safe, and effective environment for some of Albuquerque’s most vulnerable populations.
