Alpena Public Schools is now accepting applications for the position of Food Service Float Helper. This role is designed to provide essential support across multiple school kitchens and cafeterias throughout the district, assisting in the preparation and serving of meals to students. The Food Service Helper position is vital in ensuring an efficient, safe, and pleasant dining experience for all students. Employees in this role take on a flexible schedule, moving between buildings as needed to help maintain food service operations. The position reports to the Lead Cook and/or Food Service Supervisor and is instrumental in maintaining food safety standards, inventory management, and quality meal service. The Food Service Helper is responsible for assisting with the receiving, preparation, and serving of menu items, as well as performing daily cleaning of kitchen equipment to uphold sanitation requirements. The role includes ordering supplies, recording servings, managing money transactions, operating kitchen equipment, and maintaining accurate production records in compliance with federal and state guidelines. This position requires a proactive approach, with Food Service Helpers often stepping into the role of Lead Cook during their absence, ensuring continuity and consistency. Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or GED and one year of child nutrition experience, with prior exposure to quantity food preparation and service preferred. Completion of mandatory statewide training programs on sanitation, safety, food service basics, and communication is required. The role demands the ability to handle physical tasks that include lifting up to 50 pounds and working in various conditions such as high temperatures and noisy environments. Candidates must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work cooperatively with coworkers and students, and maintain reliable attendance.
