The role of Park Attendant is a seasonal, part-time position requiring energetic and positive individuals to support the operations of Hanover County's parks and recreational facilities. This role focuses primarily on weekends, though it offers some flexibility in scheduling, requiring work on two to three weekends per month. Park Attendants are assigned to various locations across Hanover County and perform crucial duties that ensure the parks remain safe, clean, and presentable for public enjoyment. This position is non-benefited and offers an hourly wage ranging from $15.61 to $19.95.
Park Attendants play a vital role in the community by preparing athletic fields for games and practices, which includes tasks such as infield grooming, line painting, and setting bases. They also perform routine inspections of general park spaces including trails, picnic shelters, sports courts, play areas, walkways, parking lots, announcement booths, skateparks, restrooms, and concession buildings. These inspections help identify any damage, vandalism, or safety issues so that timely repairs or interventions can be made. Documentation and reporting of such issues are a key part of the responsibilities.
Customer service is another important aspect of this role, as Park Attendants assist athletic organizations, mobile food vendors, and special event organizers with permitted uses of park facilities. They ensure that all facilities are utilized appropriately and report any misuse to supervisors. Park Attendants also assist park visitors with general inquiries or requests, helping to foster a welcoming and supportive environment.
This position involves operational tasks such as opening and securing park facilities, gates, restrooms, and other buildings. The role requires the ability to operate County vehicles, including utility terrain vehicles, and small power equipment, with some duties involving commercial-grade mowing equipment. This ensures that the parks remain well-maintained and safe for all users.
Candidates must be capable of moderate physical labor that involves walking, standing, stooping, and lifting up to 50 pounds regularly. The position also requires the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team while displaying professionalism and tactfulness in interactions with the public. Working conditions may vary, but the environment is predominantly outdoors in different park settings across Hanover County.
Applicants must be at least 17 years old (with a minimum of 18 years of age required for driving duties), possess or be willing to obtain a valid driver’s license, and undergo a criminal records check including fingerprinting. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not mandatory. The role demands availability for evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts during the active season from March through November.
