This full-time position, offering an hourly wage between $21.58 and $25.00, requires a compassionate individual who can act as a mentor, advocate, and community liaison. Reporting to either the Social Worker or Program Coordinator depending on program assignment, the Peer Specialist helps veterans build life skills, manage daily living activities, and overcome obstacles related to housing, recovery, and health.
The Veteran Peer Specialist position is multi-faceted and dynamic. It involves coordinating individual and group services that empower veterans to meet personal goals and live independently. Responsibilities include providing emotional support, coaching, resource connection, and facilitating peer-to-peer groups and life skills classes. The Peer Specialist also plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and therapeutic living environment, monitoring client well-being, de-escalating conflicts, and ensuring compliance with program and funder requirements.
Beyond direct client interaction, the role includes planning and coordinating site-wide community activities, thematic celebrations, and engaging veteran-centered events to promote cohesion and morale among residents. The position requires effective communication between clinical and program staff to foster a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. The role is essential for the success of various U.S.VETS programs, including Transitional Housing, Long-Term Supportive Housing, Mental Health, Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN), and Rapid Re-Housing programs.

                - High school diploma required
 - One year of experience in social services or related field preferred
 - Veteran of the U.S. military or military-related family member preferred
 - Knowledge of empowerment and self-advocacy techniques
 - Experience working with homeless and/or veterans preferred
 - Experience in residential environment with histories of homelessness with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders
 - Experience facilitating support groups preferred
 - Strong oral and written communication skills
 - Professional manner and appearance

 - Ability to take direction
 - Ability to work effectively with diverse group of clients, staff, and community members
 - Computer proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Internet and ability to use client tracking databases and electronic case records

 - Must meet company insurance requirements and complete a provided driver training course
 - Driver history report which meets company insurance requirements to drive company vehicle and complete a provided driver training course upon hire
