Gainesville, FL, USA, FL Part-Time $40 - $40
This role is offered by a reputable organization responsible for managing air traffic operations to ensure the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of aircraft within controlled airspace. The hiring establishment operates a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Air Traffic Control Tower, playing a critical part in maintaining the safety and efficiency of air transportation. The company places the highest priority on aviation safety and strives to provide seamless coordination between aircraft departing and arriving within the designated airspace, making sure compliance with FAA regulations and standards is never compromised. Their operations are centered around utilizing direct visual observation alongside radar and navigational aids to facilitate optimal traffic management and flight sequencing. The position is that of an Air Traffic Controller (VFR Tower Controller), which demands a highly disciplined and focused professional entrusted with the critical responsibility of directing air traffic at an airport's control tower under Visual Flight Rules conditions. This employment is subject to strict federal and departmental regulations related to certification, medical clearance, and drug and alcohol testing. The compensation for this role is $40.37 per hour with an additional hazardous work rate of $4.98, highlighting the role's specialized nature and the importance of maintaining health and safety standards in the demanding environment. In this role, the individual works under the supervision of a Tower Manager but is expected to perform duties independently once properly trained. The Air Traffic Controller makes real-time, critical decisions that influence the safety and efficiency of arriving and departing aircraft. These include determining the sequence and timing of departures and arrivals, managing the use of runways to ensure safe separation between aircraft, coordinating with other controllers, and handling both Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations as delegated. The controller is responsible for monitoring communications frequencies, navigational aids, and control panels, giving clear instructions to pilots regarding frequency changes, runway usage, and departure turns. Responsibilities extend to ensuring that IFR and VFR separations meet FAA standards, adjusting operations based on weather conditions, and providing essential information to pilots about field conditions and other critical flight variables. Additionally, this role involves preplanning traffic sequencing and checkpoints to maintain necessary separation in busy or complex traffic conditions, maintaining constant situational awareness of the airspace up to five miles or more around the airport, and continuously communicating with aircraft under the controller’s jurisdiction. The position involves collaboration with other airport entities, including weather bureaus, airport management, operations offices, and emergency services such as fire and ambulance to coordinate responses in case of emergencies or aircraft in distress. This position requires a specialized set of skills including quick decision making, detailed knowledge of FAA regulations and air traffic procedures, proficiency in operating control tower equipment, and effective communication skills. It offers opportunities to train others on the job and to maintain high levels of proficiency through continual practice of lower grade duties as necessary. The role is vital in maintaining the safe and efficient flow of air traffic, making it indispensable to airport operations and the broader air transportation system.
