The part-time Cook position at Caritas Family Solutions is a meaningful role that goes beyond simply preparing food. This role is integral to the organization’s mission of providing vital nourishment to children from challenging backgrounds. The work involves preparing meals in large batches that will be distributed to clients, as well as individualized meal preparation tailored to clients’ needs. With typical work hours ranging from 16 to 24 hours per week, employees in this role work a schedule of 6am to 2pm on either Thursday, Friday, and Saturday plus every other holiday, or Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday plus every other holiday. This job requires on-site attendance, with no remote work allowed.
The job is designed for individuals who take pride in their cooking skills and who are motivated by the impact their efforts have on the lives of children and families served by Caritas. It involves ensuring the freshness and quality of food by carefully checking, rotating, and storing ingredients properly. Maintaining safe and sanitary food-handling practices in preparation areas is essential. Candidates will prepare meals by weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients according to recipes or personal judgment, seasoning and cooking the food, and presenting it appropriately. The cook must be vigilant about food safety by regulating temperatures of ovens, grills, broilers, and roasters.
This role requires physical activity such as lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for prolonged periods, and performing repetitive motions. The environment involves exposure to various atmospheric conditions like fumes and odors and requires the use of protective equipment such as masks and gloves. Caritas aims for a safe, healthy workplace and strictly enforces a drug-free policy.
Ideal candidates will have at minimum a high school diploma or equivalent, and previous experience or knowledge in food service is preferred. They should also be able to obtain necessary certifications including Public Health Food Service Licensure and Food sanitation certification. Key skills for success in this role include active learning, critical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to maintain quality control and food safety standards.
