The City of St. George operates a comprehensive transit system known as SunTran, providing public transportation services that emphasize safety, reliability, and convenience to residents and visitors. As a part-time position within this public transit system, the SunTran Transit Operator role involves the operation of transit vehicles of various sizes along assigned routes. The primary mission of the transit services aims to offer safe, secure, and comfortable transportation to passengers while adhering to established schedules and regulations. The City of St. George is committed to maintaining high standards in customer service and operational excellence within its transit division. The SunTran Transit Operator will be tasked with providing exceptional public transportation services on a part-time basis, working no more than 28 hours weekly. Compensation ranges between $21.05 and $25.02 per hour, reflecting the operator's experience and credentials. This position requires individuals capable of operating transit buses safely, efficiently, and politely, fostering a positive experience for all passengers. Operators will also be responsible for keeping order within the vehicle, handling fares, and addressing passenger concerns with courtesy and professionalism. Beyond driving responsibilities, the Transit Operator aids in vehicle maintenance, safety inspections, and helps in the planning and outreach activities of the transit division. Operators have a progression path through three levels - Transit Operator I, II, and III - encouraging career growth based on experience, training, and performance. Each level brings expanded responsibilities such as training new operators and involvement in advanced operational duties. Applicants must possess a valid commercial driver license (Class A or B) with passenger endorsements and maintain a current Department of Transportation medical card. Experience in public transit or related vehicle operation is preferred, with opportunities for advancement through training programs including TAPTCO courses. Operators will be expected to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, adapting to the dynamic needs of the transit system. This position demands physical capabilities including the ability to frequently enter and exit buses, manage fare collections with fine motor skills, and occasionally assist passengers, sometimes under stressful scenarios. Safety and punctuality are paramount, as operators must adhere strictly to schedules, traffic regulations, and respond effectively to all operational communication. Ultimately, a SunTran Transit Operator is the face of the City’s public transit, embodying its values of safe, courteous, and dependable transportation services.
