LA Family Housing is a distinguished non-profit organization dedicated to addressing homelessness through comprehensive homeless services and real estate development. With over 40 years of experience, the organization has positively impacted the lives of more than 15,000 individuals annually by providing housing solutions that aim to end homelessness. LA Family Housing prides itself on innovation, best practices, and leadership in housing production and homeless services, setting a national standard for policy and program excellence. The organization is committed to social justice, providing equitable services, and fostering an inclusive environment for both its participants and staff.
The role of Resident Advocate at LA Family Housing offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute directly to the fight against homelessness by supporting tenants in permanent supportive housing. This position primarily involves being an after-hours presence at multiple housing sites, offering crisis intervention and support to formerly homeless residents who often face complex health, mental health, and substance use challenges. The Resident Advocate functions as a critical link between tenants and onsite service staff, ensuring tenants receive the necessary monitoring, assistance, and conflict resolution support outside of typical business hours.
More specifically, the Resident Advocate is responsible for engaging tenants with empathy and understanding, using a harm reduction and trauma-informed care approach. The advocate gains insight into each tenant’s unique circumstances to provide personalized support and acts as a mediator during conflicts to de-escalate potentially volatile situations. Additionally, the role requires attentiveness to safety concerns, monitoring security cameras, and responding quickly to emergencies such as health crises or unauthorized entries by contacting appropriate emergency services and support teams.
The Resident Advocate also plays a key role in programming, assisting with after-hours events, tours, and participant engagement initiatives that foster community and wellness among tenants. Documentation is essential to the position, maintaining daily incident reports in the HMIS/Champ database and reporting to both property management and service teams to help ensure coordinated care and safety.
This evening and weekend position demands flexibility to work across various site locations and adapt to multiple scheduling needs, including holidays. Fluency in Spanish is a plus, enhancing communication with diverse tenant populations. The role requires resilience, excellent interpersonal skills, and a firm commitment to non-judgmental service to those experiencing homelessness, including individuals with complex behavioral health needs.
Working at LA Family Housing offers a dynamic environment with opportunities for professional development alongside leaders in the homeless services sector, supported by comprehensive employee benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, a 403B retirement plan, and paid time off. This role is suitable for individuals passionate about community service and homelessness advocacy who seek to make a significant difference while building a rewarding career in social services.
