The role of Bar Manager is a crucial leadership position responsible for supervising and managing all aspects of bar operations within the restaurant. The Bar Manager's primary objective is to foster a skilled team of bartenders who consistently deliver excellent service and adhere to beverage preparation standards. This position involves controlling beverage costs, overseeing production and labor, ensuring beverage quality, and driving sales growth through local marketing campaigns and promotions. The Bar Manager acts as the frontline leader during shifts, ensuring operational excellence, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, organization, and safety. This role also includes acting as Manager on Duty in the absence of the General Manager, taking responsibility for the entire operation and security of the establishment.
In addition to managerial duties, the Bar Manager is accountable for staff development by recruiting, training, coaching, and motivating the team to achieve high performance and morale. They handle scheduling and manpower planning to ensure proper staffing levels for each shift. The role requires strong decision-making skills, particularly in guest relations, vendor management, employee relations, sales, and service strategies. The Bar Manager must maintain thorough knowledge of competitors' offerings to keep the bar competitive in the market.
To succeed, the Bar Manager must be adept at managing inventories, purchasing, preventive maintenance of bar equipment, and adhering to health and safety regulations. Effective communication skills are essential, as the role demands frequent interaction with guests, team members, and suppliers. The ideal candidate will have a background in restaurant or bar management, experience with purchasing and production, and the ability to lead by example during high-demand periods.
- Minimum 6 months restaurant management experience
- Minimum 2 years bar experience
- College coursework or Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Prior experience in purchasing and production
- Ability to walk and stand for up to 10 hours per shift
- Ability to bend, stoop frequently
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs including maneuvering beer kegs
- Must be able to read and write English
- Must hear well amid loud background noise
