The Mount Zion Operating Room (OR) is part of UCSF Health and serves as an inpatient care facility with 10 state-of-the-art operating suites. These suites support a wide range of surgical specialties including breast/plastics, endocrine, otology/head/neck/sinus (OHNS), benign gynecology, ophthalmology, minimally invasive spine, pain services, radiation oncology, and orthopedic surgery. Mount Zion OR is equipped with advanced integrated computer and video systems and is a primary site for ophthalmology surgeries and cancer treatment, with some surgeon clinics located in the renowned Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Recently, orthopedic surgery has been added with three sub-specialties: shoulder joint, hand and wrist, and ankle surgery.
The role of the Principal Surgical Technologist at UCSF Health encompasses a leadership position within the operating room team. This position works an 8-hour day shift, Monday through Friday, and it involves critical responsibilities beyond those of a Senior Surgical Technologist. The Principal acts as a preceptor, mentor, and key resource to new staff in the scrub role, supporting their professional development and integration into UCSF’s complex surgical environment. Additionally, the position serves as a vital liaison with Biomedical Technicians, assisting with equipment repairs and maintenance to ensure all surgical tools and technology are functioning optimally.
The Principal Surgical Technologist also plays an important role in operational efficiency by assisting the Perioperative Manager and Director with service activities such as checking surgical carts, ordering supplies, and identifying process improvements that enhance the workflow in the operating room. The ideal candidate will have substantial expertise in one or multiple complex surgical specialties and possess strong skills in precepting, time management, and organization.
The salary range for this position is $53.26 to $66.37 per hour, with actual placement within the range depending on experience and internal equity according to UCSF policies. This position requires flexibility as it involves orientation and work across multiple UCSF Medical Center locations. - Three years experience as a surgical technologist
- Graduate of surgical technologist training program or equivalent experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated expertise in one complex surgical specialty or multiple specialties
- Demonstrated skills in precepting, time management, and organization
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills in customer service, problem-solving, and initiative
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
