About Gem Air: Gem Air is a 'family-owned' and operated FAA Part 135 airline based in Salmon, Idaho (SMN). We provide 'essential air service' to the 'remote backcountry' of Idaho and Montana. We are a 'vital link' for passengers, mail, and freight, flying a fleet of 'Cessna 208B Grand Caravans' and 'Britten-Norman Islanders' into challenging airstrips. We are seeking a 'multi-talented' and 'customer-focused' VFR Pilot who is also willing to perform 'Ground Operations' duties. This is a 'hybrid role' perfect for a 'new commercial pilot' ('no experience' in Part 135 required, we provide training) who has a 'team-player' attitude and is willing to do what it takes to get the job done, from flying the plane to 'loading the baggage'. Your New Career – The Role: This is a 'dual-role' position. Your 'primary' role is as a 'VFR Pilot' for our scheduled and on-demand flights. You will be the 'Pilot in Command' (PIC) responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft, passenger safety, and navigation, often into 'backcountry' and 'mountainous' terrain. Your 'secondary' role, when you are not flying, is as a 'Ground Operations Agent'. You will help answer phones, take reservations, check in passengers, 'load cargo and baggage', and assist with keeping the station running. This role requires 'excellent flying skills', 'strong decision-making' (especially regarding weather), and a 'roll-up-your-sleeves' work ethic. You must be 'based in Salmon, ID'. The Training – Your Foundation for Success: 'No experience' in Part 135 operations is required. We provide a 'comprehensive, paid training' program to get you up to our standards and compliant with FAA regulations. This includes: * 'Aircraft Indoctrination:' Ground and flight training to make you an 'expert' on our Cessna Caravans and BN-2 Islanders. * 'Part 135 Operations:' Detailed training on our operations specifications, flight procedures, and FAA regulations. * 'Backcountry/Mountain Flying:' You will receive 'specialized training' from our senior pilots on the unique challenges and techniques of flying safely in the 'Idaho mountains'. * 'Ground Ops Training:' You will be trained on our 'reservations system', customer service standards, and 'cargo/baggage loading' procedures. A Day in the Life – What to Expect: Your 'day shift' starts early at the Salmon airport (SMN). You'll check the 'weather'—your most important task. If the weather is good, you'll 'pre-flight' your Caravan, check the 'mail and freight' manifests, and 'physically load' the aircraft. You'll then go to the terminal, 'greet your passengers', check them in, and 'personally brief them' on the flight's safety procedures (acting as 'both pilot and flight attendant'). You will then fly the route, navigating 'visually' through mountain passes to a remote airstrip. After landing, you'll 'help unload' your passengers and their gear. You'll fly several 'legs' (flights) like this. If the weather is bad and flights are grounded, you will work in the office, 'answering phones', taking reservations, and helping prepare for the next day's operations. This is a 'hands-on' job where 'you do it all'. Why Gem Air? This is a 'rare opportunity' for a 'new pilot' to build 'invaluable flight time' (PIC time) in a 'challenging and rewarding' environment. You will become an 'expert mountain pilot'. You'll be part of a 'small, close-knit family' and a 'vital part' of the local community. We offer 'competitive pay' for a VFR pilot role, a 'stable schedule' (home most nights, 'no weekend shift' flying on scheduled routes unless on-call), and the 'unbeatable lifestyle' of living and flying in the 'Idaho backcountry'.
