The Head of Global Shipping role at Sotheby's involves leading the design, implementation, and management of the company’s worldwide shipping strategy. This senior leadership position is critical to ensuring the secure, efficient, and compliant transport of high-value art, collectibles, and luxury assets across Sotheby's extensive global operations. The role requires a strategic visionary who can set global shipping standards, champion best practices, and continuously innovate carrier partnerships, packaging protocols, customs compliance, and client experience. Balancing strategic oversight with detailed operational execution, the Head of Global Shipping ensures that Sotheby's reputation for excellence, integrity, and superior client service is maintained throughout every stage of the shipping journey.
The incumbent will be responsible for defining and executing a robust global shipping strategy that aligns with Sotheby's business goals, exceeds client expectations, and upholds the brand's esteemed reputation. This includes establishing and maintaining worldwide standards for shipping operations—encompassing compliance, security, packaging, and communication—with an emphasis on continuous improvement and innovation through leveraging technology and digital tools. Overseeing the secure and efficient transport of assets across auction, retail, and private sale channels is a key aspect of the role, along with ensuring adherence to customs, import/export, insurance, and cultural property regulations to mitigate risks effectively.
The role also involves developing and maintaining strong vendor and partnership networks by negotiating contracts, managing global carrier relationships, and benchmarking performance to maintain best-in-class standards. The Head of Global Shipping will integrate client-centric shipping solutions into Sotheby's broader service model to enhance transparency, reliability, and client satisfaction. Financial stewardship is another critical responsibility, including managing the global shipping budget, forecasting infrastructure needs, and leading data-driven reporting and analytics to optimize shipping performance and ROI.
Ideal candidates will possess advanced degrees such as an MBA and at least ten years of progressive leadership experience in global shipping and logistics, particularly within luxury, fine art, or fragile asset transport sectors. Expertise in international shipping regulations, customs compliance, and vendor management is essential, along with a proven ability to implement global shipping standards and leverage technology solutions. Exceptional leadership, negotiation, and client relationship skills are necessary to inspire global teams and elevate the shipping function as a key component of Sotheby's luxury service experience.
The position offers a competitive base salary ranging from $120,000 to $150,000, a discretionary bonus, and comprehensive benefits.
