About the Role: The Transit Bus Operator plays a critical role within the public transportation system by operating transit buses over assigned routes according to pre-established schedules. This safety-sensitive position requires continuous attentiveness to passenger safety, fare collection procedures, and courteous public interaction. Operators are responsible for safely picking up and discharging passengers at designated stops while adhering to all traffic laws and organizational policies. This role demands excellent customer service skills and the ability to manage fare transactions accurately while maintaining a professional and positive demeanor during interactions.
As part of the transit team, the bus operator is subject to random drug and alcohol testing to ensure the ongoing safety and compliance required for this sensitive role. The position requires the applicant to be at least 18 years old and to have at least one year of customer service experience involving interaction with the general public. After hire, the successful candidate must obtain a valid City Operator's Permit within six months, hold a valid New Mexico driver's license or be able to obtain one by the date of hire, and within two weeks of completing city training, secure a New Mexico Commercial Driver's License Class B with Passenger endorsement. Ongoing maintenance of these licenses and successful completion of federally mandated physical exams and drug testing are required for continued employment.
Preferred candidates will have knowledge of vehicle operations including the use of air brakes, familiarity with city streets and roads, and understanding of the operational characteristics of transit vehicles. Knowledge of customer service principles, safety practices, and record-keeping procedures is also advantageous. Strong interpersonal skills such as tact, patience, and courtesy are essential for establishing positive interactions with the public and colleagues.
Significant skills needed for this role include the ability to learn the operations and services of a public transportation program, effective communication, and the capacity to perform essential job functions with or without accommodation. Additional skills include the capability to adapt to adverse weather conditions, maintain proper certifications, and complete required reporting accurately.
