The Child Development Center at Patrick Space Force Base (SFB) is a vital non-appropriated fund (NAF) establishment dedicated to providing exceptional care and development programs for children. As a facility that supports the morale, welfare, and recreation (MWR) activities of both the Air Force and Space Force personnel, it plays an essential role in maintaining a supportive and family-friendly environment within the military community. The center offers a range of educational and recreational services tailored to meet the needs of children while their parents fulfill their duties. This institution values high standards of safety, cleanliness, and nutrition, ensuring that every child’s care experience is positive and enriching.
The available position is a Regular Full-Time role within the Child Development Center, guaranteeing 35 hours of work per week. This is a non-appropriated fund position, meaning that funding does not come from taxpayer dollars but rather through self-sustaining revenue sources related to morale, welfare, and recreation activities. Employees in this role are eligible for leave accrual and an array of benefits characteristic of NAF employment. Physical exertion is a regular part of the job, which includes frequently lifting objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally more, as well as extended periods of standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, and bending.
The role requires a working leader who can effectively oversee a team of three or more workers to accomplish various cooking assignments. This includes providing day-to-day advice, relaying instructions from supervisors, initiating work, setting the pace, demonstrating proper work methods, and ensuring compliance with security, safety, and housekeeping standards. The cook will utilize a full range of quantity cooking procedures, often preparing four or more menu items per meal or handling particularly complex recipes that involve multiple steps, ingredients, and preparation times. The goal is to ensure that all menu items are ready for serving simultaneously without overcooking or waste, demonstrating expertise in timing and meal coordination. Duties extend beyond cooking to include maintaining a safe and efficient workspace and performing other related tasks as assigned.
Candidates must be physically capable to meet the demands of the job and committed to maintaining the standards of the center. The position is open exclusively to current NAF employees and requires completion of a background investigation, a pre-employment physical, and obtaining and maintaining ServSafe Manager certification. This role is unionized under the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), Local 2568, and operates under federal employment guidelines including adherence to the Selective Service registration for eligible males and employment verification through E-Verify.
The Child Development Center represents a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about food preparation and team leadership within a supportive federal environment. Employees contribute directly to the welfare of military families by ensuring nutritious and well-prepared meals in a safe, professional atmosphere.
