The Chief Pilot position at The Home Depot is a pivotal leadership role within the company’s corporate aviation division. This role is responsible for leading a team of skilled and experienced pilots, ensuring the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance with aviation regulations. As the Chief Pilot, you will provide strategic direction and operational leadership across a geographically dispersed flight crew team operating in multiple states and international locations including the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This position demands a visionary leader who can develop, implement, and continuously improve aviation policies and procedures to support seamless coordination, crew readiness, and successful mission execution.
The Chief Pilot serves as the primary steward of flight standards, crew performance, and operational integrity. This involves close collaboration with other departments such as maintenance, dispatch, human resources, and executive leadership to ensure that aviation operations align with the enterprise-wide goals and comply with all applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and internal policies. This role requires an individual who is not only technically proficient as a Pilot in Command but also an effective leader with excellent communication and organizational skills. The Chief Pilot frequently participates in safety management systems, change management initiatives, and ongoing performance management, including administering appraisals and feedback to the flight team.
Additional responsibilities include selecting, developing, and motivating the aviation staff, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability, and managing records to ensure flight currency and the accuracy of certifications and qualifications. The role involves a significant amount of travel, often requiring overnight stays more than 50% of the time. Working conditions typically include a comfortable indoor environment, although the position involves dealing with high-pressure situations, tight deadlines, and demanding operational requirements.
This leadership opportunity requires a minimum of ten years of professional pilot experience with at least 7,000 total flight hours, including 4,000 hours as Pilot in Command and 2,000 hours in heavy jet aircraft. The Chief Pilot must be certified with an FAA First Class Medical Certificate and an FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate, holding type ratings in at least two corporate jet aircraft. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent education related to the field is also required. Preferred candidates may hold the Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) credential and demonstrate extensive experience in international operations as a captain. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Aviation and oversees the direct supervision of staff, including personnel management, professional development, and performance evaluation.
